Famous Farm Pancakes are classic buttermilk pancakes made with super simple ingredients. It is the easiest recipe and yields moist, golden, and delicious pancakes every time!
Do you have a food that is tied so strongly to your childhood that you can’t help but reminisce every time you eat it? For me, it’s Famous Farm Buttermilk Pancakes. My grandpa’s sweet Aunt Dorothy grew up and lived on a farm in South Dakota her entire life. This pancake recipe has been passed down from her (hence the name). As a kid, my grandparents made these pancakes for the grandkids all 👏 the 👏 time 👏. In fact, they still make them and it’s one of my favorite things!
🥇Why they're great
- They're super easy to make
- The recipe only requires simple pantry ingredients
- They come together in a flash
- They turn out moist, slightly fluffy, and perfectly golden
🥞 Ingredients
Buttermilk: Makes the pancakes fluffy and moist.
Eggs: Large eggs are best.
Baking soda: Activates with the buttermilk to make the pancakes fluffier.
Baking powder: Adds a bit of extra lift to the pancakes.
Salt: Just a pinch for extra flavor.
Flour: All purpose flour is perfect.
Vanilla: Just a dash rounds out the flavor of the pancakes and perfectly compliments any syrup.
🥣 Instructions
These are the simplest buttermilk pancakes you will ever make! Just combine the buttermilk, eggs, baking soda, baking powder, and salt in a bowl. Then whisk in the flour and vanilla. Your batter is done in under five minutes. Then just cook on a griddle over medium heat and dig in 😋.
🍓 Topping Ideas
You can cook toppings right into the pancakes, or pile them on top after the pancakes are finished. My childhood favorite topping in pancakes was thinly sliced apples. 😋 Other great options in the pancakes are chocolate chips, toasted coconut, or thinly sliced peaches. For the top of the pancakes, try fresh berries, maple syrup, this delicious triple berry topping, honey butter syrup (equal parts honey and butter melted in the microwave), peanut butter, pecans, or walnuts.
🙋 Questions & Answers
Flip the pancakes when the edges appear cooked and begin to dry out and bubbles form and pop on the top of the pancake. They should be golden brown on the bottom and slightly puffy.
Although I prefer pancakes fresh, they can be frozen if needed. Cool them completely on a wire rack to prevent condensation from building up. Then freeze them in a single layer on a cookie sheet for 30-60 minutes. Store in a zipper bag for 2-3 months.
There are three ways to reheat frozen pancakes. My favorite method is to warm them for 8-10 minutes in a 350° oven. Lay them in a single layer on a sheet pan and cover the pan with tinfoil to prevent them from drying out. Another method is to wrap them in a damp paper towel and warm them for about 30 seconds in the microwave. Lastly, if you like slightly crispy edges, you can pop the pancakes in the toaster. The time and heat entirely depends on your toaster, but I recommend watching them carefully so they don’t burn.
Buttermilk pancakes last well in the fridge for 2-3 days. If you need them to last longer, see the section above about freezing pancakes.
👨🏼🍳 Tips & Tricks
- Don’t substitute with homemade buttermilk… the texture just isn’t quite the same.
- Make your pancakes with fresh batter. If the batter sits too long, the rising agents (baking soda and baking powder) will not be as effective.
- Flip the pancakes when the edges appear cooked, bubbles are popping on the top, and the bottom of the pancakes is golden brown.
- If you are using toppings, add them to the wet side of the pancake once you see bubbles start to form. If you add them too soon, it can flatten the pancakes unnecessarily.

Delish! That was super easy to make and super good. I love that they don’t have any sugar and I can just enjoy the buttery flavor. They pair really well with Granny Smith apples baked into them too. Yum!
