  • It's deliciously buttery and smooth

Ingredients for hot honey syrup for pancakes

This recipe only requires a four ingredients that you already have on hand! Ingredient quantities and the full recipe are below, but here are a few noteworthy tips.

Honey, butter, cayenne pepper, and red pepper flakes on a white countertop.
  • Butter: We use salted, but feel free to use unsalted. It can be cold or at room temperature.
  • Honey: Use the regular honey from the grocery store or substitute for store-bought or homemade hot honey made with fresh chili peppers. This will give it even more flavor and spice.
  • Cayenne pepper: Adjust the heat level by increasing or decreasing this.
  • Red pepper flakes: These are optional. They add a pop of color and up the spice level, but you can leave them out and it tastes just as great.

How to make pancake syrup with honey

This recipe genuinely only takes 2-3 minutes to make. It's best when you warm it up right before serving so that is has that lusciously smooth consistency and pours easily.

A 1 cup glass measuring container with honey on the bottom, a chunk of cold butter in the honey, and spices on top of the butter.

Start by adding all your ingredients into a small bowl or microwave safe dish. I like to use my glass liquid measuring cup because it already has a pour spout on it for serving.

A 1 cup glass measuring container with melted honey, butter, and spices mixed together.

Microwave for 30-60 seconds on full power, or until it is fully melted. Watch carefully after the first 30 seconds to keep it from boiling over. Stir together and serve!

Hint: You can easily double or triple this recipe by increasing the ingredients. Make sure to use a large enough dish so that it doesn't boil over.

Can I use pancake syrup instead of honey?

We do not suggest substituting pancake syrup in recipes that call for honey. Pancake syrup reacts differently when cooked and has a very different flavor than honey, which will change the results of your recipe.

How to use spicy honey syrup

  • Dipping sauce for sausage or baked bacon
  • Drizzle it on fried chicken or chicken wings with some hot sauce

FAQ

How long does hot honey syrup last?

Store your spicy honey pancake syrup in an airtight container or mason jar in the fridge for 1-2 weeks. Reheat gently in the microwave or on the stove, stirring every 20-30 seconds until it is loose.

Is this a healthy alternative to pancake syrup or maple syrup?

This syrup is much less processed than traditional pancake syrup that contains corn syrup and artificial ingredients. It does contain high amounts of natural sugars and fats, so it should be eaten in moderation.

Can I make spicy honey butter syrup on the stove?

An easy way to cook this syrup without a microwave is in a small pot on the stove. Cook over medium-low heat until everything is melted, stirring frequently to combine.

Tips and tricks

  • Make it spicier by adding more cayenne pepper or red pepper flakes.
  • Try substituting store-bought or homemade chili honey to add another level of flavor.
  • Use salted butter or add a pinch of salt for more flavor.
