Sweet, heat, and tang! This Hot Honey Mustard Recipe is a perfect balance of flavors that comes together in just 5 minutes with a handful of simple ingredients. This homemade honey condiment is made with both dijon mustard and yellow mustard to replicate the depth of flavor you find at a restaurant for a fraction of the price. Add cayenne and some basic spices for the ultimate dipping sauce!

Sadly, so many homemade honey mustard recipes fall flat in comparison. But we have tested and tried tons of ingredient combinations to find a spicy honey mustard sauce that doesn't disappoint!

Why this is the best honey mustard recipe

Ingredients

This recipe only requires a few basic ingredients to make. Ingredient quantities are in the recipe card below, but here are a few noteworthy tips.

  • Mayonnaise: You could substitute this for Greek yogurt if you prefer.
  • Honey: Use regular or substitute with store-bought or homemade hot honey.
  • Yellow and dijon mustard: I like an equal 1:1 ratio for the perfect combination, but feel free to use more or less of whichever mustard you like. Use a total of 2 tablespoon of mustard.
  • Lemon juice: Look for a lemon that's slightly soft and feels like it will juice easily. You can substitute with apple cider vinegar or white vinegar if you prefer that flavor.
  • Spices: You will need garlic powder, smoked paprika, and cayenne pepper for great taste. A little goes a long way, but feel free to add more if you'd like.

How to make hot honey mustard

This recipe could not get simpler to make. It may be tempting to eyeball the measurements, but I suggest trying it as written the first time around. Once you taste it, you can eyeball any adjustments to get it to your taste!

Add all your ingredients to a medium or small bowl. I love to use this citrus juicer to squeeze the juice out of my lemon with the least mess.

Use a whisk to combine everything together. The whisk is important because it helps the sticky honey incorporate evenly. You can serve it at room temperature or refrigerate before serving.

Hint: You can easily double or triple this recipe, but keep in mind that a little goes a long way. Make sure to use a good size bowl so you can stir it easily without spilling.

FAQ

How can I make homemade honey mustard thicker?

To thicken homemade honey mustard, add extra mayo or Greek yogurt. This will lighten the mustard taste, but should thicken it slightly. It will also thicken slightly after being refrigerated.

Is honey mustard high in sugar?

There is not an exceptional amount of sugars in this recipe, but there are some from the honey. Full nutrition information can be found in the recipe card below.

Is this recipe dairy free and gluten free?

Yes! If you make the recipe as written, it is dairy free and gluten free. The mayo does not contain dairy.

  • ¼ cup mayonnaise
