🤤 What does this seasoning taste like?
This dry rub is a bold, savory mix that packs plenty of the classic pot roast flavors! It's a delicious blend of garlic, onion, pepper, and thyme, with a hint of paprika in the background.
🌿 Ingredients for pot roast seasoning
Most pot roast seasoning recipes require that you dig through your cabinet for all kinds of things - garlic powder, brown sugar, celery seed, onion powder, corn starch, bay leaves... it's too much! This delicious dry rub simplifies the whole process by using a steak seasoning mix that already has most of the flavors you need.
- McCormick Grill Mates Montreal Steak Seasoning (affiliate): This is genuinely the seasoning we love to use! You can substitute this with another steak seasoning, just be sure that it includes dehydrated onion, garlic, salt, and pepper at a minimum.
- Dried thyme: This gives the steak seasoning a little help with herby flavor.
As a funny side note, there is also a McCormick Slow Cooker Savory Pot Roast Seasoning Mix, but we actually prefer the steak seasoning. Even in our slow cooker recipes. 🤷♀️
🥣 Step-by-step instructions
Simply combine the two ingredients in a bowl and you’re done! You can use it on any cut of beef roast, but I high recommend a chuck roast because they are affordable and yield very tender meat.
When you’re ready to use, drizzle your pot roast with olive oil and sprinkle it with 1 tablespoon of seasoning mix per 1 pound of meat. This recipe makes enough seasoning for a 3 pound roast.
🙋 Questions and Answers
For a flavorful pot roast, it’s important to use enough seasoning. Because the spices in this recipe are bold, you should only need 1 tablespoon of dry rub per pound of beef roast.
You should season your pot roast right before cooking. With a flavorful seasoning mix, there is no need to let it sit. I season mine, sear it, then place roast in the slow cooker with beef broth and let the magic happen.
You can store the roast rub in a sealed container for several months at least. Be sure to store it in a cool, dry place.
You can’t go wrong serving a savory pot roast meal with creamy mashed potatoes, a side of green beans, and fluffy dinner rolls. For more ideas, check out our list of 10 Pot Roast Side Dishes.

As a note, homemade pot roast seasoning is a great alternative to the store-bought packages that include crazy ingredients such as caramel color, yeast extract, soy protein, gum arabic, silicon dioxide, and hydrolyzed corn gluten, wheat gluten protein, corn maltodextrin, folic acid and artificial flavors. The steak seasoning we use has all real spices and natural flavor.
