All our rice recipes are in one convenient spot - everything from easy tutorials to flavorful pilafs in all kinds of variations. Whether you're keeping it simple or getting fancy, it's all right here

A cooking pot full of white rice with a spoon stuck in the top.

Nothing is more annoying than cooking rice and having it turn our unevenly cooked or opening the lid to mushy rice. I wanted a no-fuss, low-maintenance method that worked every single time - something that was consistent without babysitting the pot.

There are a so many ways to make rice, and everyone has their own "perfect" technique. And honestly, I don't think there's really a right or wrong way. It is whatever method you like best.

Over the years we've tested plenty: lid on, lid off, different water ratios, high heat, low heat - you name it, we've tried it. With this method, there's no need for a fancy rice cooker or special pan. No over-complicated steps like tucking towels under lids or draining off boiling water. It's simple, easy to remember, and works like a charm.

  • Easy to replicate: It is a simple method that turns out the same each time.

Ingredients for cooking jasmine rice

This recipe only requires a 1 real ingredient and it is a pantry staples!

Salt, rice, and water on a white countertop.
  • Rice: Jasmine rice has a mildly floral scent and is a little softer than other rice varieties which means it needs less water to cook.
  • Salt: Kosher salt is the one we use for testing, but you can leave it out if you don't want it.
  • Water: Necessary for getting perfectly tender rice grains.

How to cook Jasmine rice on the stove

A wire mesh strainer full of rice dipped in a bowl of water.

For this stovetop method, start by putting the cup of rice in a strainer and rise until the water mostly runs clear rinsing off excess startch. Make sure to allow the excess water to drip off shaking it lightly.

Rice cooking in a steel pot with a clear lid covering it.

Add the rinsed rice, just over cup of water, and salt to a pot. We lie to use a pot with a clear glass lid which makes it easy to see what is happening inside. Cook over medium-high heat, until it comes to a fast simmer. It should not boil but it will be close.

Cooked rice in a pot with a clear lid.

Turn the heat down to low heat - it should be at a gentle simmer and cook for 10 minutes. Resist all temptation to remove the lid. We want all that moisture to stay in the pot.

A fork stuck into a pot of white rice.

Take off the heat but leave the lid on for 10 more minutes. Remove the lid, then take the times of a fork and run them back and forth over the top for perfectly fluffy white rice.

Hint: Letting the rice sit in the pan with the lid on gives the steam time to work its magic, so it makes perfect jasmine rice every time. It is a great step when making classic rice pilaf, but not applicable to this recipe.

What to serve with

Jasmine rice is the perfect rice for serving in bowls, with Thai food, or under any asian inspired dish like:

  • Orange Pork Tenderloin Stir Fry
  • Japanese Slow Cooker Beef
  • Sweet & Spicy Pineapple Chicken
  • Pepper Steak
  • Gochuchang Chicken Stir Fry
  • Sheet Pan Honey Garlic Chicken Thighs
  • Simple Teriyaki Pork Tenderloin

How to store cooked jasmine rice

Cooked jasmine rice should be cooled to room temperature and placed in an airtight container. Store in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.

Can you reheat jasmine rice?

Yes, you can totally reheat jasmine rice. Our go-to method is the microwave - quick and easy. Just put the amount you need on a microwave-safe plate, then sprinkle a little water over the top. I like to wet my clean hand and let the water drip off my fingers onto the rice. It is just enough moisture without being too much. Cover it to lock in the moisture, then heat in 30-second bursts until warm. For more ways to do it, check out our step-by-step instructions on how to reheat rice.

FAQs

Do I have to rinse jasmine rice?

Strictly speaking rice does not need to be rinsed, but we prefer a quick rinse just to ensure that the extra starches come off before cooking. A small step that helps ensure that the rice is fluffy and not mushy. Well worth the effort.

Should you toast jasmine rice?

When cooking rice as a plain side dish there is no need to toast the rice, that is a technique used when cooking flavored rice dishes like pineapple lime rice, coconut rice, or even cranberry rice.

Tips & tricks

  • Rinsing isn't strictly required, but I prefer it, even a quick rinse.
  • Stick to medium high when bringing to a boil. Higher makes it more mushy.
  • Adding salt is optional, but I think it adds needed flavor.
