Do you ever freeze soup? It’s one of my favorite little tricks to make life easier—perfect for those hectic days or when we roll back home after a trip, totally wiped but craving something cozy, homemade, and actually good for us.

But also for those jam-packed nights when we’re tempted to grab takeout—having ready-to-go meals in the freezer totally saves the day.

Why to freeze potato soup

  • No waste: Freezing soup makes the most of every dollar and every minute you spent cooking—nothing goes to waste.
  • Quick & Easy: It takes hardly any effort to freeze, and even less to reheat when you need it.
  • Make-Ahead Friendly: Perfect for prepping in advance. Your future self will seriously thank you for the help.

What kind of potato soup can be frozen?

In our experience smooth potato soup is the best kind to freeze. If yours is chunky like this Easy Sausage Potato Soup or this Potato and Corn Chowder, freezing might change the texture. So depending on how particular that texture matters you should consider that before freezing those.

We have had the most luck freezing smooth potato soups like 4 Ingredient Potato Soup or this Potato Leek Soup.

How to freeze potato soup

Freezing potato soup is very simple, but following these instructions will ensure the correct texture.

Begin by allowing the soup to come to room temperature. Then you can decide if you want to freeze it in a large batch for a family dinner or in individual sizes for a quick grab and go meal.

Spoon the soup into your containers—we’re big fans of these silicone molds that let you freeze and then pop out perfect individual portions.

Just make sure to leave a little space at the top so it has room to expand in the freezer without overflowing.

Place the containers in the freezer until the soup is fully frozen. Once it’s solid, you can pop out the soup blocks—if you're using silicone molds—and toss them into a freezer bag for easy storage

Super important: Label and date your soup! Once frozen it is so hard to remember what is what in the freezer.

How long can potato soup freeze?

Potato soup can hang out in the freezer for up to 3–4 months if it’s sealed in an airtight container. If you’re using a freezer bag, be sure to squeeze out as much air as possible to help it last as long as possible and avoid freezer burn.

What is the best container to freeze potato soup in?

There are so many really good options:

  • Freezer bags: This little gadget helps keep the bags upright while the soup freezes. Once they’re solid, you can lay them flat and stack ’em up to save space in the freezer - super handy.
  • Glass jars: Small or large depending on what you need.
  • Souper Cubes: One of our personal favorites! There are 1 cup, 2 cup, and 4 cup options.
  • Glass storage containers: These freezer friendly pieces are perfect for a family size meal.
  • Inexpensive deli containers: These are reusable but not so precious that they can't be taken to out of the house. They are also amazing for taking a meal to someone in need.

FAQs

Can I freeze potato soup with dairy in it?

You can freeze potato soup with dairy in it! I do that all the time. But if you want the creamiest texture, another option is to stir in the dairy after thawing. Either way works, just depends on what’s easiest for you.

How to reheat potato soup?

Allow the soup thaw in the fridge or use the microwave if you're short on time. Then just warm it up over medium heat until it’s nice and steamy. Heads up - soup can sometimes get a bit more liquidy after being frozen, but a quick stir usually brings it right back to life.

Tips & Tricks

  • Avoid adding toppings before freezing. Add fresh toppings after it is reheated.
  • Leave room for it to expand.
  • This really only works well with potato soup that is pureed smooth. Chunky soup does not freeze as well.
